Breathe Better, Sleep Soundly, and Thrive
With Airway Dentistry

If you are struggling with restless nights, chronic fatigue, or unexplained jaw pain, you already understand how sleep disruption can impact your everyday life. Many of our patients come to us having spent years looking for answers to why they feel drained or cannot stop snoring. This search, especially without resolution, is exhausting in itself.
Dr. Bangs looks beyond symptoms to find the root cause of your struggle. With airway dentistry, she can connect the dots between the structure of your mouth and your breathing to help identify treatment to restore rest, focus, and vitality.
How To Tell If You’re Experiencing Airway Struggles
Signs to Look Out for in Adults
Airway restrictions in adults usually present as sleep-disordered breathing, ranging from chronic snoring to obstructive sleep apnea. However, the signs are not always limited to noise during sleep.
You may also experience:
- Teeth grinding or clenching can often not be a result of stress, but a subconscious protective reflex that your body uses to push the jaw forward and force a restricted airway open.
- Chronic fatigue that leaves you feeling unrefreshed or experiencing a severe afternoon “crash” can indicate that you aren’t getting the deep, restorative sleep you need during the night, which can be due to oxygen deprivation.
Did you know that beyond fatigue, restricted breathing has long-term systemic consequences? Research shows that chronic oxygen deprivation during sleep leads to the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which is a primary marker linked to the development of dementia later in life.
Signs to Look Out for in Children
Since sleep-disordered breathing in children is so misunderstood, Dr. Bangs has become particularly passionate about identifying and treating airway dysfunction in her younger patients. The signs of airway dysfunction in children are also entirely different from adults.
Here’s what to look out for:
- ADHD Misdiagnosis is common as, unlike adults who respond to fragmented sleep with lethargy, they instead become hyperactive, irritable, and struggle with focus. Consequently, being misdiagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
- Bedwetting in older children can be a physiological response to a lack of oxygen during sleep. When the airway collapses, the body enters a state of panic, triggering the sympathetic nervous system to “void and go”.
- “Perfect” baby teeth often look lovely, but tight baby teeth without gaps are actually a clinical warning sign. A lack of spacing indicates that the jaw is too narrow to accommodate future adult teeth and proper airflow.
Uncovering the Cause with Airway Dentistry
When the structures of the mouth are underdeveloped or misaligned, they can obstruct your airway. By evaluating how the anatomy of your oral cavity is affecting your ability to breathe, particularly while you sleep, airway dentistry helps identify the cause of the unwanted symptoms you may be experiencing during the day.
Here’s a simple analogy to help you understand: think of your tongue as a large vehicle, like a Hummer, and your jaw as the garage. If the garage is built too small, the Hummer cannot fit properly. As a result, the tongue falls back into the throat, narrowing or completely blocking the airway during sleep.
Airway dentistry aims to address these structural discrepancies to restore airflow and healthy sleep cycles.
Diagnostics That Reveal the Full Picture
Our diagnostic process uses advanced technology to create a complete functional blueprint of your unique airway. A key part of this process is our safe, low-radiation 3D imaging, which helps us perform “airway mapping”, which is a color-coded model of your throat that shows us exactly where your breathing passages are at their narrowest point. During your visit, we also carefully examine your mouth and throat to evaluate factors like tongue size, tonsil position, and the shape of your palate.
Though this is only one part of the diagnostic journey. We also want to understand how you breathe in your natural environment – at home, in bed. With simple and non-invasive tools, we can collect information about your oxygen levels, heart rate, and sleep architecture, all while you sleep in your own bed.
By combining our physical findings with detailed 3D imaging, we can move beyond just managing symptoms and start addressing the true root cause of your breathing issues.
There’s No Such Thing as a One-Size-Fits-All Treatment
Because your anatomy is completely unique, we skip “one-size-fits-all” methods in favor of a personalized, conservative plan built around your unique diagnostics.
| Early Intervention with Vivos For our youngest patients, we can guide the growth of the jaw using Vivos Guide or ‘Tooth Pillows.’ These devices train the tongue and cheeks to function correctly, helping the jaw grow to its proper size and often eliminating the need for braces later in life. | Custom Oral Appliances If a non-invasive oral appliance is right for your needs, we offer custom-fitted devices that are worn only while you sleep. These appliances are tailored to your mouth to support a simple shift that prevents soft tissues from collapsing into your airway. |
| Laser Snoring Treatment Should a custom appliance not be suitable for your needs or wants, we also offer a laser treatment to tighten the collagen at the back of your throat. The treatment is often described as feeling like ‘Pop Rocks’ in your throat, and only needs three initial sessions, with touch-ups down the line. | Myofunctional Therapy This therapy is essentially physical therapy for your face and mouth. It uses a series of simple, guided exercises to train your tongue to rest comfortably against the roof of your mouth. This helps establish consistent nasal breathing and promotes proper swallowing patterns. |
